PROFILE

My career has revolved around nursing and community services. Over the years I have developed a strong interest in library management that I am now keen to pursue.

 

I am a highly motivated and competent person who is committed to excellence in all aspects of my working life. However it is my excellent communication and empathy skills, plus proven ability to quickly learn new systems and methods that I would view as my major attributes.

  • Cover for nursing shortages throughout the hospital
  • Manage, plan and implement the care for a group of patients

Key achievements

  • Working on my own and within a team to ensure the care of the patients assigned to me is of a high standard, often in a speciality and ward I am not overly familiar with
  • Going into a new area every day and having to orientate myself to the surroundings, Learning how to the use the computer system in the organisation, including online learning, clinical resources and online booking of services with minimal assistance of others and limited time to do so

Key achievements

  • Returning to ward based nursing after a nine year break with no orientation and little support and doing so effectively and safely. Asking questions of permanent staff when necessary and working within my scope of practice
  • Working in a new area every day and quickly establishing working relationships with the team members. Gaining trust of patient’s within my care who have met me for the first time and know that I am agency staff
  • Never getting visibly upset when I am cancelled at the last minute or sent home early, but looking at the bright side of an unexpected day off, rather than the loss of income

2012-2015

Registered Nurse Division 1

Queensland Health

 

  • Responsible for the care of up to 400 female offenders, some of whom are pregnant, both in a high security facility and low security community facility
  • Administration of medication, drug and alcohol withdrawal health assessment and triaging and emergency treatment
  • Many of the offenders also exhibited complex mental health issues

Key achievements

  • Assessing patients solely on what I could see and observe, rather than relying on what they said, as they often exaggerated to gain medication. This involved a different approach to nursing than what I had previously been used to
  • Being firm and assertive often to verbal aggression or emotional blackmail from offenders seeking extra medication or requesting an unwarranted medical certificate. Also being firm with correctional officers when questioning my professional judgment
  • Working in an emotionally stressful environment amongst strong personalities and maintaining my integrity and professionalism at all times. Supported more vulnerable members of staff experiencing difficulties adapting to the harsh environment

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Nursed in numerous specialities including Educator at Asthma Foundation of Queensland
  • Redesigned the Asthma Friendly Schools website and created a database of schools, which I then utilised for communication purposes
  • Heavily involved in the establishment of an anaesthetic assessment service specifically aimed at urology patients
  • Was the sole nurse at the health centre at a low security correctional facility revamping the service and procedures
